What will movie theaters look like when they reopen? Regal Cinemas is offering a preview of the changes moviegoers can expect after months of being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Regal, the nation’s second-largest owner of movie theaters, released a video Tuesday detailing its reopening health and safety measures based on guidelines from the CDC. Most notably, it shows several people seated inside a movie theater, wearing face masks and spaced out to ensure social distancing.
Employees and moviegoers will be required to wear face masks at all times; customers may only remove face coverings while seated inside the auditorium to enjoy food and drink. Seat capacity is reduced by 50 percent, with at least two empty seats between groups, and group sizes will be limited.
“The plan also includes safety measures based on feedback received from employees and moviegoers they have deemed most important for their return,” a statement said.
The video details how Regal will also give employees daily screenings and PPE including gloves; increase cleanings between showings; use floor markers to help lines with social distancing; place hand sanitizers at entrances and other key areas; and utilize contactless payments for both tickets and concessions.
Regal Cinemas plans to reopen U.S. theaters on Aug. 21, just in time for the newly announced release date of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” The “Inception” director’s highly anticipated new film will hit theaters in 70 countries on Aug. 26 and U.S. theaters on Sept. 3.
However, it still remains unseen if indoor movie theaters will be allowed to reopen in all states. All regions of New York are in “phase four” of the reopening process, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo still has not given permission for movie theaters and some other entertainment venues to resume operations.
AMC Theatres, the nation’s largest chain of movie theaters, plans to open in mid-to-late August with similar protocols to limit the spread of Covid-19, including requiring face masks for employees and customers.
Movie theaters have been largely shut down due to Covid-19 concerns since March. Regal previously planned to reopen its U.S. theaters on July 10, then July 31.
“Welcoming theatergoers back to our cinemas will be a celebration for not only our team and our industry, but most importantly for the fans who have been anxiously awaiting the year’s upcoming releases,” said Mooky Greidinger, CEO of Regal’s parent company Cineworld, in a statement last week. “With the health and safety of our staff, customers and communities as our top priority, we are happy to invite audiences to return to the timeless theatrical experience that we have all dearly missed.”
It’s unclear how many new movies will be available on the big screen. Disney’s live-action “Mulan” has shifted to Disney+ on Sept. 4, “Wonder Woman 1984″ moved to October, the James Bond adventure “No Time to Die” is set for November and Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick” will open next summer. Russell Crowe’s “Unhinged” and Janelle Monae’s “Antebellum” are currently scheduled for release Aug. 21, and “Bill and Ted Face the Music” will come two weeks later along with “Tenet.”
Regal Cinemas said in June it would fill some theaters with older titles like “Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back,” “Jaws,” “Black Panther” and “Beauty & The Beast.”
Regal Cinemas has more than 40 locations in New York state, including Syracuse-area movie theaters at Destiny USA, Great Northern and Shoppingtown malls.
