Olivia Wilde Confirms Secret Marvel Movie in the Works - Vanity Fair

Say hello to Spider-Woman.

Olivia Wilde is headed to the Marvel Universe. After making her feature directorial debut last year with the affable coming-of-age comedy Booksmart, the actor turned filmmaker has been absorbed into the superhero-moviemaking machine, tapped by Sony to helm a Spider-Woman movie, Deadline reports. Wilde seemingly confirmed the news herself, tweeting Deadline’s article with an accompanying spider emoji on Wednesday.

The movie would be part of Sony’s growing carousel of Marvel characters, anchored, of course, by Spider-Man. (The current franchise stars Tom Holland, who has since turned his attention to more dramatic fare.) Sony had no comment about the film, nor did the studio confirm the film would revolve around Spider-Woman. Per Deadline, the project will be produced by Amy Pascal and written by Booksmart scribe Katie Silberman.

Spider-Woman was created in the late 1970s. In the comics a number of key Spider-Man characters have taken on the heroic mantle, from Gwen Stacy to Mary Jane Watson. The character has largely been unexplored in film, though Hailee Steinfeld voiced the Gwen Stacy version of Spider-Woman in the Oscar-winning animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Sony is also working on an animated Spider-Woman spin-off.

It’s unclear which narrative direction Wilde would take while adapting the comic. Either way she joins a growing list of female directors finally tapped to direct tentpole Marvel movies, following Anna Boden, who codirected Captain Marvel with Ryan Fleck; Cate Shortland, who helmed the soon-to-be-released Black Widow stand-alone; Chloé Zhao, who’s directing the upcoming The Eternals; and Nia DaCosta, who is helming the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel. The Spider-Woman movie would also join Sony’s other planned comic adaptations, including movies based on the characters Black Cat and Silver Sable.

Wilde proved herself to be an adept filmmaker with last year’s Booksmart, a punchy comedy about uptight teenagers (Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever) determined to have one wild night out before graduating from high school. Though the film was sadly underappreciated at the box office, it was warmly reviewed by critics and presented Wilde as a fresh new directing talent. She’s since signed on to direct the psychological thriller Don’t Worry, Darling, starring Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, Shia LaBeouf, and Dakota Johnson. She’s also working on a holiday movie for Universal, which will see her reteam with Silberman and Pascal.
