Staggered showtimes, mandatory face masks and reduced ticket prices are all part of Aug. 14 reopening plans for 43 Cinemark theaters.
Cinemark Bridge Street in Huntsville is among the theaters reopening on that date, according to a press release.
Cinemark operates a total of 345 theaters in the U.S.
The Huntsville location is currently the company’s only theater in Alabama.
The “Welcome Back” ticket pricing includes $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors, for showings of “Comeback Classics,” including movies like “Jurassic Park,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Back to the Future,” “Goonies” and “Ghostbusters.” Tickets are now on sale at cinemark.com.
Guests will also be able to rent an entire auditorium at Cinemark Bridge Street, for up to 20 people to watch a private showing of a film. Prices start at $99 via the company’s website. That price is exactly one dollar cheaper than Huntsville’s Touchstar Cinemas Madison Square 12 has been renting their own auditoriums for since June.
According to a press release, the reopening Cinemark theaters will feature “greatly enhanced cleanliness, sanitizing and safety measures at every step of the moviegoing experience.” So called “Seat-Buffering Technology” will automatically block seats adjacent to a party upon ticket purchase. All public and high-touch spaces, such as concession stands, door handles, drink stations, self-ticketing kiosks, benches and restrooms will be thoroughly sanitized every 30 minutes using products identified by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to be effective in eliminating COVID-19.
Cinemark’s press release also says each auditorium will be disinfected every morning, and all handrails and occupied seats, along with those on either side, will be sanitized between showtimes. There will also be seat wipes and hand sanitizer available for customers.
Auditoriums will have reduced capacity complying with local regulations. Cinemark says they’ve also streamlined its in-theater ticket verification processes, no longer requiring digital ticket holders to carry a paper ticket, and moviegoers purchasing tickets at the theater will no longer need to hand their printed ticket to an usher. To help reduce potential contact, cash payments will not be accepted at the concession stand.
Cinemark, the third-largest U.S. theater chain according to Variety, closed its theaters in mid-March due to the ongoing worldwide coronavirus pandemic. In addition to Huntsville, their Aug. 14 reopenings include theaters in places like Fayetteville, Ga., Baton Rouge, La., Oak Ridge, Tenn., Austin, Texas, Las Vegas, Little Rock and Tulsa. Cinemark previously reopened theaters in 16 or so U.S. cities, including Orlando, Dallas and Houston. More info regarding the company’s “phased reopening” can be found at cinemark.com.
In other recent movie news, “Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” a twice-delayed spy thriller expected to be a summer blockbluster, is now scheduled to open in theaters Sept. 3. However, a theatrical release of Disney’s live-action “Mulan” adaptation has been scrapped. Instead, Disney will take “Mulan” directly to home video streaming, via their Disney+ service.
