Alright, let’s get to the movies.

1 Knives Out (New in July)

Rian Johnson’s whodunit is so lovingly made, so wonderfully acted, so just downright fantastic it’s hard for me not to just geek out about it on and on. Please, see this movie.

2 My Spy (New in July)

Dave Bautista has fun, and is truly charming, as a CIA agent in this crime caper which pairs him with nine-year-old Sophie, played by Chloe Coleman.

3 The Hustle

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson are truly funny as con-women in this remake of the classic Steve Martin flick, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

4 Rocketman

This Elton John biopic is as delightfully over the top as the pop star whose story it tells.

5 The Goldfinch

This film, an adaptation of the very good Donna Tartt novel, may be a bit meandering at times, but it has some breathtaking images and truly moving passages.

6 Hotel Artemis

This film isn’t John Wick, but it’s a cousin of the film series in terms of tone / style / vibe, and if you loved that series, you’re going to find a lot to like here.

7 7500

Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives a powerful performance in this airborne thriller that will be sure to stress you out.

8 Escape from Alcatraz

Clint Eastwood is vintage Clint Eastwood in this prison break film. No one delivers cool lines all cool-like like Clint Eastwood.

9 Rambo: Last Blood

Sure, they’re running back a well-trod formula here, but when you’ve got Sly Stallone grumbling stuff and shooting bad guys, what more do you need?

10 Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Swedish)

The original Swedish trilogy may not be as stylish as David Fincher’s American remake, but I’d argue Noomi Rapace is more convincing as the titular character.

11 A Most Wanted Man

The late Philip Seymour Hoffman is predictably excellent in this noir spy film. The plot can be a bit murky, but it’s a solid espionage film for fans of the genre.

12 Brittany Runs a Marathon

This film takes the turf Judd Apatow and co. staked for young, lost men and applies it to a young woman in NYC who’s trying to get her life together by picking up long-distance running.

13 The Report

This movie can be a bit dour, but its story — about the cover-up of torture of detainees during the Iraq war — is an important one.

14 Downfall

This film sits with Hitler and his most devoted followers during the final hours of the Third Reich. It’s difficult to watch at times, but spellbinding all the same.

15 The Farewell

Awkwafina is spectacular in this film about a family returning to say goodbye to a dying matriarch.

16 Friends with Kids

A great piece of partially improvised mumblecore comedy, with an outrageous cast.

17 Mission Impossible: Fallout

This is just a perfect action movie. Not sure what else to say about it.

18 The Spy Who Dumped Me

An absolutely winning semi-parody of the spy genre, with great performances from Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon.

19 A Simple Favor

Paul Feig directs this “evil women doing evil things” film, and Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick are wonderful in it, mostly because you can tell they’re having just so much fun with the source material.

20 Honey Boy

Shia LaBeouf wrote and stars in this heartbreaking look at his own life. He plays a role inspired by his own father, and the film takes on a powerful energy simply by the way he plays the man who (in part) tormented him.

21 One Child Nation

A gripping and terrifying documentary about the unseen consequences of China’s one-child-only policy.

22 Logan Lucky

The director of Ocean’s 11 goes to the Deep South for his heist film, and it’s hard not to totally buy into the charming, wonderful story.

23 The Next Three Days

Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks star in this film that’s equal parts thrilling and ridiculous. The plot? Bananas! But you’re going to have fun!

24 Hot Summer Nights

Another coming-of-age film starring Timothee Chalamet, this one built around a kid who gets wrapped up in the drug world.

25 The Lost City of Z

A period piece made with style and heart, with a fun sense of adventure and great performances from Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson.

26 Fair Game

Sean Penn and Naomi Watts star in this film about a journalist and a woman who doubles as a CIA agent.

27 Fighting With My Family

A surprisingly fun film about the wrestling world, made with a strong helping hand from The Rock.

28 Late Night

I’m still not exactly sure what the message of this film is supposed to be (the late night host is at once too smart, but also not smart enough?) but I’m a sucker for Emma Thompson in anything.

29 Generation Wealth

This documentary, about the insanely rich in this country, is the most terrifying film I’ve seen in years.

30 Last Flag Flying

A somber, sweet, and funny film about veterans going to help a friend bury his dead son.

31 Manchester By The Sea

This movie is near perfect, and it will also rip your heart out of your chest and throw it to the ground.

32 Suspiria

A modern adaptation of one of the strangest horror films ever made. This one is much more watchable, but also: It’s still pretty strange!

33 Kill the Irishman

A pretty standard mob film, elevated by strong performances from Vincent D’Onofrio, Christopher Walken, and Val Kilmer.

34 Apocalypto

Mel Gibson’s action film is breathtaking gory stuff.

35 Clue

One of the truly perfect comedy films, and it was based on a board game. Who says you need elevated source material?

36 Not Another Teen Movie

This send-up of the teen genre has arguably outlasted a lot of the nineties movies it was making fun of.

37 The Lighthouse

I feel pretty strange recommending this movie, because it absolutely is not for everyone, but if you’re willing to get weird, man, there are few more daring explorations of weirdness out there.

38 Super Size Me

A powerful documentary that did a lot to change the way our nation thought about nutrition.

39 I Am Not Your Negro

The essential documentary on the life of James Baldwin, the American essayist and novelist whose work has remained totally vital.

40 Light of My Life

A post-apocalyptic film with a gruff performance from Casey Affleck.

41 The Big Sick

A charming little rom com which takes place a bit in hospitals. (As one does.)

42 Roman Holiday

Speaking of rom coms, you can watch one of the perfect classics of the genre via Amazon Prime.

43 Midsommar

A horror film that takes place entirely during the day time, and guess what, it’s even scarier for it!

44 The Man From Nowhere

A truly wonderful action film directed by Jeong-beom Lee, about a lowly pawn shop owner with a history of violence.

45 Troop Zero

Allison Janney is very funny in this movie about an off-kilter girl scout troop.

46 Guava Island

It’s essentially a big old Childish Gambino music video set in the islands, but, that’s a great thing to enjoy.

47 Miss Sloane

Jessica Chastain is wonderful in this thriller about a K-street lobbyist without any scruples. Or, perhaps, maybe she does have some scruples.
