What's playing at the Milwaukee area's drive-in movie theaters this week - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

kojongpana.blogspot.com

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the Milwaukee area hadn't had a drive-in movie theater since 2001.

Now, there are at least five of them, either up and running or in the works.

The need for social distancing to rein in the pandemic has fueled people's interest in drive-ins in Milwaukee, where watching a movie from the safety of your own car provides added separation.

Each has its own approach, but the common denominators are a focus on touch-free transactions (all require tickets or registering online) and safe distancing practices. Some offer food and beverage options.

Here's a look at what's showing this week at the drive-ins, along with a quick guide to the area's new venues.

Milky Way Drive-In

The first new drive-in to pop up in Milwaukee in response to the social-distancing dictates of the coronavirus pandemic, the Milky Way debuted May 22 in the parking lot at the Milwaukee Milkmen's home field at Ballpark Commons, 7900 Crystal Ridge Drive, Franklin. Powered by a 40-foot outdoor LED screen, it changes its lineup nightly. Admission is $35 per car per movie. Tickets must be ordered online, at milkywaydrivein.com. There were a lot of sellouts at the Milky Way its first two weekends, you check in early if you're interested.

Here's what's showing at the Milky Way this week:

Thursday, June 4: 6 p.m., "The Angry Birds Movie 2"; 8:45 p.m., "Jurassic Park"

Friday, June 5: 6 p.m., "Playing With Fire"; 8:45 p.m., "The Goonies"

Parking Lot Theatre

This venture, organized by community activists Anne Koller and Manny Lara, pulled off a first May 29: They set up the first drive-in movie theater in the city of Milwaukee.

Unlike other drive-ins, the pop-up Parking Lot Theatre plans to set up events — live music and a movie — at different locations around the city, partnering with neighborhood groups and local businesses.

"Our idea is that this happens in neighborhoods in the city, and that experience is authentic to that neighborhood," Koller said in an interview.

The first screening, held in a parking lot at 701 W. St. Paul Ave., included a concert by local musician Joe Wray and a showing of the 1985 favorite "The Goonies." "Safety agreements" help make sure patrons and staff are protected. Tickets were sold via the website (parkinglottheatre.com), at $25 per car; 45 cars with more than 100 people took in the first night, Koller said.

More dates and locations will be announced next week, she added: "We don't see this as a short-term play."

Kapco's Live at the Lot

Kapco Metal Stamping's drive-in concert series launches this weekend, at the Grafton company's parking lot at 1150 Cheyenne Ave. While it's music-centric, movies are part of the drive-in's mix, too, 8 p.m. nightly Saturday through Wednesday. Tickets and details are at the website: liveatthelot.com.

Saturday, June 6: Phil Norby, followed by "Frozen II," $30-$60

Sunday, June 7: Joe Richter, followed by "Sonic the Hedgehog," $40-$70

Monday, June 8: Ryan McIntyre, followed by "Onward," $30-$60

Tuesday, June 9: Peter Thomas, followed by "The Lion King" (2019), $40-$80

Wednesday, June 10: Peter Thomas, followed by "Toy Story 4," $40-$80

Marcus Center's Music & Movies

The Marcus Performing Arts Center, 929 N. Water St., has been showing movies in the outdoor Peck Pavilion for the past few summers. This year, it's taking the movies higher — to the top level of the parking deck across State Street. The center has plans to show "Music & Movies," a series of music-centric films, on Thursdays and Fridays at least through June, starting June 11; admission is free, but you have to register online to get a digital ticket for entry. Go to marcuscenter.org/series/music-and-movies for tickets and more details. The gates open at 6:30 p.m.; the proceedings start at 7 p.m.

Thursday, June 11: "Enchanted"

Friday, June 12: "Dreamgirls"

Indoor movies, too — at Fox-Bay

With theater chains still sorting out best practices — and waiting for the summer blockbusters to open — indoor movies have been dark across the Milwaukee area. Except at Fox-Bay Cinema Grill, 334 E. Silver Spring Drive, Whitefish Bay, which reopened May 29.

Like the drive-ins, it's showing a mix of kids' movies and older fare. Starting Friday, Fox-Bay is running "Trolls World Tour," "The Big Lebowski" and two of the better Harry Potter installments, "The Prisoner of Azkaban" and "The Goblet of Fire."

Tickets and more info are available at the theater's website: foxbaycinemagrill.com
