Looking to see a movie this weekend?

Well, the West Wind drive-in movie theaters in San Jose and Concord have reopened for business.

Both locations had been temporarily closed due to curfews enacted earlier in the month in response to looting and civil unrest that has arisen in protests over the death of George Floyd.

But the curfews in San Jose and Contra Costa County/Concord were recently lifted, allowing the drive-in theaters to once again welcome movie-goers.

The company’s Sacramento location — which did not run into any curfew-related issues — is also open.

None of these theaters are showing releases any newer than “Trolls World Tour,” which came out in early April. Studios have withheld a number of theatrical releases, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the close of basically all cinemas back in March.

Indoor cinemas remain closed, but a number of drive-in theaters — which allow for social-distancing-friendly viewing experiences — reopened in May. Since that point, the drive-in theaters have undergone a resurgence in popularity, drawing large numbers of people looking for the rare break from sheltering in place to enjoy an evening of entertainment outside of their homes.

West Wind has been showing movies released earlier in the year as well as such blockbusters of yesteryear as “E.T.,” “Jurassic Park,” “Shrek” and “The Mummy.”

Meanwhile, a pop-up drive-in will begin screening classic movies at the Alameda Fairgrounds in Pleasanton June 12. Details on that are here.
