OROVILLE — While the pomp and circumstance has died down the celebration of Oroville’s 2020 graduates has not.
To acknowledge the accomplishments of the community’s several hundred high school and adult school graduates Downtown Oroville is hosting drive-in movie nights for all four schools.
Not only are the drive-ins for the graduates the movies star the graduates. The movies are videos created by Dean Gurr, owner of Creative Imaging of the different schools’ virtual graduations. The videos include photos of the graduates in their cap and gown from their drive-through graduations, student speeches and other highlights.
“We just wanted to celebrate the seniors, give them something special. We thought it would be fun if they could come to the drive-in to see their graduation together instead of sitting at home alone watching it on a computer screen,” said Lexie Ramsey, events coordinator.
The drive-in movie celebrations will be held on three consecutive nights. Oroville Adult School and Prospect High School graduation videos will be shown June 14. Las Plumas and Oroville High School graduates will have their nights of celebration on June 15 and 16, respectively.
The drive-ins will be in the upper parking lot of the Oroville Municipal Auditorium. The parking lot opens at 7 p.m. and the videos start at 9 p.m. One car per graduate is allowed and graduates must show diploma or senior identification to get in.
“We’re hoping all seniors will hear about these events and be able to attend with their families,” said Ramsey.
Downtown Oroville is also partnering with Ishi Hills and Central middle schools to host drive-in movie nights celebrating the students promoted from eighth-grade this year.
The Ishi Hills movie-night is June 12 and Central Middle School’s event is June 13.
Each night a slideshow of all eighth-graders from their respective schools will be shown and then students and their families are invited to stay and enjoy the movie “The Sandlot.”
There is no charge for this event; however, this event is only for 8th-grade graduates and their families. One car allowed per graduate.
“We know the schools are encouraging families to decorate their cars and go for a ‘cruise’ through town past neighbors’ and friends’ homes on their way to the celebration,” said Ramsey.
