The clear sunset forged a brilliant array of colors Friday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium before the movie ended and fireworks popped into the sky.
The setting itself was among a consensus response from the gathering of 1,500 or so at the second Blue Wahoos Movie Night experience at the bayfront ballpark.
“It was the most fun we’ve had all year,” was one emailed response in a survey sent to ticket holders Friday, following the team’s second movie night, “Abominable” – the 2019 animated adventure film.
Just like every event, the Blue Wahoos ask for completion of a customer satisfaction survey used to gauge performance and make improvements.
Friday night, the movie-goers were able to exit the stadium through both dugout tunnels, as well as the regular stadium exit gates. This was one of the changes from the first movie night, June 6, when Disney’s Frozen 2 was shown.
“One thing we learned for our first one was egress,” said Shannon Reeves, the Blue Wahoos event sales manager. “While it’s easy for us to maintain distancing while the event is happening, right after the fireworks, when everybody is trying to leave at the same time, that’s where we have to focus to maintain the safety from beginning to end.”
With the likelihood of no baseball games this season, due to the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic, which has shuttered all levels of Minor League Baseball and placed continued doubt on a Major League Baseball season, the Blue Wahoos have transitioned into an events company.
The next movie night, which will feature “Field of Dreams” will be June 20 with fireworks, as part of a two-day, Father’s Day weekend, set of activities.

“Since it opened in 2012, this has been a community stadium,” Reeves said. “That has been a focus. Of course, we play baseball here, though not right now, but this stadium was built as a space for the community.
“Everyone who works here, works every day to serve that mission… to make this the best spot to live. And to give our community a place to have fun.”
Pensacola Catholic was planning to hold its graduation ceremonies Saturday night, the first high school commencement held at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Tuesday night, Pensacola High will have graduation for 89 seniors in its International Baccalaureate program.
Numerous other events continue to be booked throughout the summer. Earlier this week, Reeves was in contact with Minor League Baseball’s main office in St. Petersburg.
She is ensuring the events adhere to required safety standards amid the novel pandemic.
“We called, because we have to be super safe,” she said. “The first one (movie night) we felt pretty confident about everything. We were well staffed, we had-rovers on the field to enforce distancing. We were able to see people were being responsible.
“That worked well. We had a lot of food stations, drink stations. We didn’t see a lot of lines.”
The films chosen for movie night are designed to stay within the team’s family-friendly objective. Judging by the high survey scores and comments provided, the ticket buyers have been appreciative.
Prices are $5 adult general admission $4 for youths and active military. Seating is available throughout the field and the chairback seating bowl. No strollers, lawn chairs, folding chairs or stadium seats are permitted for use on the field.
