DECATUR, Ind. (WPTA21) - The family that owns and operates ABCinemas can't wait to get movies back on the big screen.
That was set to happen on Sunday, but when Gov. Eric Holcomb on Wednesday cleared the way for theaters to reopen a couple of days earlier, Corey and Barb Affolder jumped at the opportunity.
The twin-screen cinema in Decatur will show its first films since March -- "I Still Believe" and "Ugly Dolls" -- on Friday night.
Theater staff will have enhanced cleaning procedures in place and theater-goers will be able to take that a step further, if they like.
"We'll be disinfecting every seat between every show," Barb Affolder said. "In addition, we will have individual one-use wipes, so if people want to take their own wipe and wipe their own seat off, they're welcome to do that."
But while ABCinema says it's ready to go, those expecting a widespread, immediate reopening of movie theaters across the region are likely to be disappointed.
A review of websites, social media accounts and movie listing services shows only a few smaller locations will open this weekend -- none in Fort Wayne.
Bones Theatre in Columbia City will screen four films -- including the classics "Jaws" and "Grease" -- on Sunday.
The Brokaw Movie House in Angola lists a pair of more recent releases -- "Trolls World Tour" and "The Invisible Man" -- for its Sunday return.
According to show listings, Northwood Cinema Grill (Fort Wayne) will reopen June 19, as will the Strand Theatre (Kendallville), according to a Facebook post by management.
But other neighborhood movie houses and the Fort Wayne megaplexes have not released their plans.
The two largest chains in the country did provide some broader guidance.
Earlier this week, AMC Theaters, with locations at Jefferson Pointe and on East Dupont Road, said it will resume operations at nearly all of its properties sometime in July.
Regal Cinemas -- owner of the complex at Coldwater Crossing -- is also aiming for a July reopening nationwide, according to the Associated Press.
At least one area multiplex won't reopen at all. The GQT Huntington 7 announced several weeks ago that its closure is permanent.
Meanwhile, a handful of area drive-in theaters -- which were permitted to open in May -- have been doing a brisk business, though each has limited the capacity of attendees.
One challenge any theater -- indoor or outdoor -- faces is the dearth of new releases to show. It may be months before Hollywood resumes a normal distribution schedule for new titles.
The following list includes information published by local theaters as of Thursday afternoon:
- Regal Coldwater Crossing – opening in July
