LAS CRUCES — Drive-in theaters are primed to make a comeback across the country as COVID-19 has changed the movie-watching experience.

Starting Friday, Allen Theatres is planning to open a drive-in theater at the Telshor 12 in Las Cruces, 2811 N. Telshor Blvd., and McGee Park in Farmington, 41 Rd. 5568. The new screens will operate through July, or until movie theaters are allowed to reopen again in New Mexico.

"Movies are a huge part of people’s lives and we’re really just trying to get a little bit of entertainment into people’s lives because obviously there’s not that much entertainment going on right now," said Russell Allen, owner of Allen Theatres. "We know what happens when people don’t have entertainment, they get restless and that’s a problem."

Allen said the movie lineup is still being determined.

Gates will open at 7:30 p.m. and the first showtime will be held about 9 p.m., or when it gets dark.

"Around 9 p.m. there will be a double feature. … We’ll run it every day for the first week and we’ll see what happens," Allen said. "We'll see how Monday through Thursday do to see whether or not we’ll do it during the week the following week."

In Las Cruces, Allen said he will use a digital projector from Video 4 to provide a full movie theater experience.

"We’re going to use a full blown digital projector just like the theater," Allen said. "We’re putting three shipping containers stacked on top of each other and we’re a building a screen off of it and putting a projector in it and getting it done."

Allen also said he is planning the drive-in around the state's health guidelines.

"We’ll do every other parking space in a zigzag formation in the parking lot — in I believe four rows of the parking spaces, and they’ll be eight feet between the cars," he said.

Though Allen Theatres owns movie complexes in myriad towns across New Mexico, only Las Cruces and Farmington will get drive-in theatres for now.

Tickets are $20. To purchase tickets and for more information, visit allentheatresinc.com.
