CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The summer movie season was supposed to be epic.
The calendar was full of popcorn fare, from sequels (“Top Gun: Maverick,” “F9”) and reboots (“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”) to musicals (“In the Heights”) and even completely original films (“Tenet,” “The French Dispatch”), too.
The coronavirus pandemic changed everything.
Movie theaters shut down on March 19, forcing Hollywood to make quick decisions on their big tentpole releases: either send them straight to video-on-demand, push them back to the fall or later, or keep them on the summer schedule hoping theaters reopen and moviegoers will be in the mood to see them in an auditorium full of strangers.
At the same time, streaming services saw an opportunity to fill the movie void by heavily promoting or even fast-tracking some of their releases for home viewing.
The result? Yes, blockbuster season is on hold-- you’re going to have to wait awhile for “Wonder Woman 1984," “No Time To Die” and “Black Widow.” But the silver lining is the the summer movie selection is now one of the most diverse in recent memory. Even better: drive-ins are thriving once again and, by mid-July, most movie theaters should be back in business, allowing fans the chance to catch a flick wherever they’re most comfortable, on the big screen or at home.
So, here are 22 movies to watch this summer. Keep in mind release dates are fluid and subject to change.
