Former “Seinfeld” and “Saturday Night Live” star Siobhan Fallon Hogan is showcasing her hometown with her latest movie.
Fallon Hogan shot scenes for “Shelter in Solitude” in downtown Syracuse on Thursday, her second feature film under her company Emerald Caz Productions. The production company, formed with her husband Peter Hogan and their son Peter Munson Hogan, released the frat hazing revenge thriller “Rushed” in August.
“Shelter in Solitude,” written by Fallon Hogan and directed by Vibeke Muasya, is described as a faith-filled, country-western prison love story told during Covid-19 times. It follows a wannabe country singer (Fallon Hogan) and her unconventional relationship with Jackson Marcus (”The Orville” actor Peter Macon) while commenting on inhumane conditions in the American prison system.
“I was always obsessed with prison stories because my father was a lawyer in Syracuse,” Fallon Hogan said in an interview with syracuse.com | The Post-Standard from her dressing room at The Redhouse Arts Center.
Thursday was the last day of principal photography. About a dozen extras were seen dressed as in prisoners and prison guards walking outside The Redhouse Arts Center, near the old Public Safety Building jail, to shoot the final scenes.
Earlier scenes were shot in Cazenovia and Erieville last month. Fallon Hogan said her company Emerald Caz Productions (“Emerald because I’m Irish and Caz because of Cazenovia”) has embraced shooting in Central New York for several reasons.
“There’s ways of doing movies on a certain budget and making them look like a $5 million budget. One of the things is great extras that look the part. Another thing is locations. There’s a location on State Street that’s a defunct jail. By the way, if you close the jail door, it doesn’t open. Let’s just say some of these actors may end up in there for quite some time if they close those prison doors today,” she said with a hearty laugh.
“Shelter in Solitude” is the second feature-length film written by Fallon Hogan, who was born in Syracuse, grew up in Cazenovia, and graduated from Le Moyne College in 1983. She’s appeared in more than 70 films and TV shows, including “SNL,” Disney’ “Holes” and the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” plus memorable roles as Elaine’s roommate Tina in “Seinfeld,” a farmer’s wife in “Men in Black,” and Dorothy the bus driver in “Forrest Gump.”
The new film’s cast also includes “T2: Terminator 2″ star Robert Patrick, “Getting On” actress Patricia Scanlon, and Fallon Hogan’s longtime friend Dan Castellaneta, best known for voicing Homer Simpson on “The Simpsons.” Patrick previously co-starred in “Rushed” as Fallon Hogan’s husband; in “Solitude,” he plays her brother.
Macon told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard he was drawn to the project because he liked the idea of showing “how Covid affects a small town” against the backdrop of a global pandemic. As a father, he also appreciated the relationship his character has with another in the film.
“It’s a quiet movie,” he said.
Macon, whose credits also include “Shameless,” “Supernatural,” “Dexter,” “NCIS” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” said he enjoyed his time in Syracuse but hadn’t had much time to explore the area. He liked the city’s architecture, he said, and meals at local restaurants like Margaritas Mexican Cantina, Lemon Grass and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.
A release date has not been announced for “Shelter in Solitude.”
“Rushed,” the first movie released by Emerald Caz, is currently available on Digital/Video On Demand (VOD) through Apple TV and other outlets. Fallon Hogan will also host a screening and Q&A on Nov. 2 at her alma mater, Le Moyne College.
