SALEM — Motorists who normally use the U.S. Route 62/state Route 45 bypass between North Ellsworth Avenue and state Route 14 will be rerouted the next 14 days, reportedly for filming of a movie.

The road closure was scheduled to begin today and continue for the next 14 days, according to a sign posted at North Ellsworth Avenue and the bypass.

Perry Township Police Chief Mike Emigh confirmed that the filming of a movie was the reason for the road closure, which he and the trustees stressed was ordered by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

According to Emigh, the section of the bypass from Jennings Avenue/Goshen Road to the interchange for the four-lane highway will also be closed.

That means the secluded stretch that’s surrounded by pretty much nothing on both sides will be completely shut down to all traffic and onlookers at both ends and in the middle.

Both Perry Township Police and Salem Police will be providing security at all the entry points to the affected section of the bypass, with traffic detoured into the city. Emigh said the cost of their services will be covered by the production.

He said the movie is a Netflix film called “Wheat Germ” and stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig and Don Cheadle. An Internet search revealed that “Wheat Germ” is the working title for a film based on the novel “White Noise” by Dom DeLillo about a train wreck that causes a toxic leak and mass evacuation of a town. The film is written and directed by Noah Baumbach and expected to be released on Netflix next year.

According to several other news outlets, including Cleveland.com and Fox 8 News, filming has already taken place in Cleveland area locations such as Cleveland Heights and in Wellington in Lorain County and in Oberlin.

The website projectcasting.com lists multiple casting calls in northeast Ohio for the movie, including a to-be-determined shooting location seeking actors/extras to play evacuees in cars for night shoots on Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 and 22, noting that filming dates are subject to change.

“We have to provide 24/7 security,” Emigh said.

He noted that motorists traveling south on state Route 45 can continue south on Ellsworth Avenue through the city or turn east on the bypass to North Lincoln Avenue. He suggested that may be an easier route for trucks.

From Goshen Road, motorists can cross over to Jennings Avenue to travel south or turn right to go west on the bypass leading to state Route 14/Benton Road or U.S. Route 62/West State Street.

He said everything will be posted with signs.

Salem Police Chief J.T. Panezott confirmed that his officers will be working a traffic detail at Jennings and the bypass.
