Eric Pearson, the screenwriter known for Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Black Widow movie, penned the script, and Avery will perform a rewrite.
Van Helsing's roots date back to Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Hugh Jackman previously starred in the 2004 Van Helsing movie, which saw him play a vampire hunter who encountered characters such as Mr. Hyde, the Wolfman and Dracula. The film, from The Mummy director Stephen Sommers, was poorly received and failed to launch a franchise.
Avery is best known for the J.J. Abrams-produced World War II zombie movie Overlord, which was released in 2018. He has since wrapped production on the superhero film Samaritan, starring Sylvester Stallone.
After faltering with Tom Cruise's The Mummy and shuttering its plans for a shared monster universe, Universal successfully relaunched its monster films with The Invisible Man, which hit theaters earlier this year and grossed $130.5 million globally on a $7 million budget. The studio has a number of filmmaker-driven monster projects in the works, including a Ryan Gosling Wolfman feature from Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell, and Karyn Kusama's Dracula.
