"Right now we're in a pandemic. I have to dress like I'm robbing a store just to cross the street. We're protesting in the streets to fight for equal rights. We're shot in the streets because we don't have equal rights. And then we're rioting in the streets to show how angry we are, which only leads to us hurting each other – same old stuff, different day."
These are the reflections of one Rhode Island College student in a fascinating short film titled "A Different Day."
Produced by RIC Director of Dance Angelica Cardente-Vessella and directed, filmed and edited by world-renowned filmmaker Marta Renzi, this unusual work features 17 members of the RIC Dance Company who videotaped themselves remotely in socially distanced locations. They then sent their videos to Renzi, who turned it into this beautifully introspective piece.
A celebrated filmmaker and choreographer, Renzi has created over 75 dances and has self-produced dozens of short, site-specific dance films. In an interview with the Nyack News, she said "her passion is to take her work outside the constraints of the concert hall and into new and unmarked spaces, often outdoors. She describes site-specific dances as liberating," and that is what you'll find in "A Different Day."
Renzi first met with the cast via Zoom, both individually and as a group. Based on her direction, they choreographed and filmed themselves then sent their videos to Renzi for further direction. Their speaking parts were recorded and sent to Renzi, as well, to be worked into the film.
Throughout the film, the dancers reflect on the meaning of happiness, personal identity, death and how to navigate a world in crisis. This work will leave lasting reverberations.
"The film was an enormous success," Cardente-Vessella says, "and a clear representation of the talent our dancers continue to model, even during a pandemic."
