Ever since Lifetime released a trailer last week for its “Lifetime original mini-movie” starring Mario Lopez as KFC’s Colonel Harland Sanders, audiences had wondered whether the whole thing was just a joke.
It kind of was—but it was also a real Lifetime movie, A Recipe for Seduction, which aired Sunday afternoon on the network. The 16-minute branded content collaboration from Lifetime, KFC and agency Wieden+Kennedy Portland, inserted the KFC founder, played by Lopez, into a typical Lifetime movie.
A Recipe for Seduction, which sends up Lifetime’s signature soapy films, focuses on a young heiress whose devious mother has hand-picked her suitor, but finds herself falling instead for Lopez’s Sanders, a new chef with a secret … fried chicken recipe.
The full movie can be found here. A Recipe for Seduction is also available on Lifetime’s apps and VOD platforms.
The mini-movie—which is “presented by Kentucky Fried Chicken,” though the KFC brand is never uttered by name—opens during a festival holiday chicken dinner, which has been prepared by the “incredibly talented” new chef, Harland Sanders. The heiress, Jessica, is being pressured by her devious mother to accept suitor Billy’s proposal, but she finds herself falling for the new chef instead.
In true Lifetime movie fashion, A Recipe for Seduction features deception, threats, forbidden love and attempted murder—along with a happy ending, and a final twist. It also includes campy lines like, “Don’t call me ‘Crouton’” and “Secret’s out, Chicken Man.”
Lopez is the latest celeb to play Colonel Sanders in various campaigns from KFC and Wieden+Kennedy Portland, following in the footsteps of stars such as Darrell Hammond, Rob Lowe, Sean Astin, Jason Alexander, George Hamilton and even Reba McEntire.
As part of the Lifetime and KFC campaign, consumers can order KFC on Uber Eats for delivery and receive six free extra crispy chicken tenders with a $20 purchase or more from Dec. 13-19 via UberEats.com or the mobile app.
