Since 2012, the city of Temecula has observed Pechanga Pu’éska Mountain Day each year on Nov. 15.
Pechanga Pu’éska Mountain Day was proclaimed a holiday in Temecula to remind the community of the culture of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians.
In previous years, the city and the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians have observed the day with a gathering or cultural activities in Town Square at City Hall.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, it is not possible to hold a public event this year, but Brad Munoa, a member of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians who is a writer, director and producer for the Pechanga Creative Studios, has created a documentary film, according to a news release.
The film, “The Mountain That Weeps,” tells of the people’s movement that protected Pu’éska Mountain. It is featured online at the American Indian Film Festival through Nov. 14. Tickets to see the film through the festival may be purchased at aiff45.eventive.org/films/5f7038541117af006317b813.
The documentary may also be viewed after Nov. 14 at www.mountainthatweeps.com.
“The film is perfectly produced and reflects a time in our city’s history that could have changed Temeculaforever. The city of Temecula is grateful for this accurate and historic accounting of this challengingtime. Pechanga Pu’éska Mountain Day formally sets aside one day to show our gratitude to the PechangaTribe for saving our community from the impacts of a massive open pit mine,” Maryann Edwards, Temecula mayor pro tem, said in the news release.
