This week’s column topic comes from inside my own house.
My wife and I like to watch Netflix, and we wondered aloud about those trailers that play by themselves when you are reading the description of a show or movie.
My wife really likes those previews, as she is not one to watch a movie she hasn’t heard of unless the trailer pulls her in.
I am more of a “read the description and then decide if I want to watch the preview” guy, so I was curious about how to turn those previews off.
It turns out the answer is easy. Netflix has an option to turn off those autoplay previews.
You’ll need to log into Netflix from a web browser and go to your Account page. Then open the Profile and Parental Controls for the profile you want to change. Scroll down to Playback Settings and then you can check or uncheck the box for Autoplay Previews.
While we are at it, I’m not a huge fan of the feature Netflix calls “Autoplay next episode in a series.”
Don’t get me wrong, I do like to binge shows, but I usually like to take a short break between episodes.
You can turn off Autoplay next episode in the same place in the Netflix settings (Accounts/Profile & Parental Controls/Playback settings).
The nice thing about both of these preferences is once you go to the Netflix web page to change them, that change is for all devices you use to watch Netflix.
Netflix also has a feature I like called Skip Intro, which you might see when you are binge-watching shows. Like it sounds, when you see it, you can press the OK button on your remote to jump directly into your show without watching the intro before every episode.
If you don’t see Skip Intro, it’s because the device you are using to watch Netfix doesn’t support it.
According to Netflix, Skip Intro works on web browsers, Android devices, iOS devices, Apple TV, Windows 10 Netflix app, PlayStation, Xbox and “many other” smart TVs and set-top boxes.
Interestingly, Netflix realizes that Skip Intro might not be perfect and if you find a show where Skip Intro drops you into the show too early or too late, you can report it and they’ll change it.
You can report Skip Intro problems at www.netflix.com/viewingactivity.
