Distribution label Well Go USA has set an Oct. 23 movie theater and drive-in release for the sci-fi thriller Synchronic, which stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan and debuted at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival.
But the horror pic's directors, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, have taken to Instagram to urge their fans to avoid their local movie theater amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, including to view Synchronic indoors.
"Due to distribution arrangements that are out of our control, the release of Synchronic into drive-ins and indoor theaters has been confirmed for October 23rd. But we want to be very clear: at the time of writing this, we personally wouldn’t go to an indoor movie theater, so we can’t encourage you to," the directors, along with David Lawson, said on the social media site.
"To us, this isn’t only about feeling safe in a theater, this is also about the scientific community indicating that enclosed spaces like movie theaters are still a hazard for spreading COVID-19 to others," the trio added.
Synchronic portrays two New Orleans paramedics responding to a series of strange drug-related deaths. Eventually they are led down an unexpected path that involves a synthetic narcotic known as synchronic.
The Synchronic directors recommended viewers possibly wait for the video on-demand release of their movies "in a few months." And Moorhead, Benson and Lawson said they were looking forward to attending the drive-in releases for Synchronic as it was released in October.
At the same time, they accepted that some fans would see their movie at the local multiplex. "If you do go see it in an indoor theater, please adhere to all guidelines. We love and miss the theatrical experience, so let's work together to stop the spread of the virus. We are infinitely grateful for anyone checking out our movies, as well as everyone who has worked on them, and want all of you to remain as healthy as possible during these unprecedented times," Benson and Moorhead, who also directed The Endless and Spring, said in their Instagram post.
