Italian actress and film icon, Sophia Loren, will return to movies for the first time in over a decade. The international superstar will serve as the leading lady in the upcoming Netflix film, “The Life Ahead.”
Directed by one of Loren’s son, Edoardo Ponti, “The Life Ahead” follows the story of a Holocaust survivor who helps to care for the children of prostitutes. This isn’t the first time Loren has depicted characters torn apart by World War II—her role as a mother desperate to protect her daughter during the conflict in the 1960 drama, “Two Women,” landed her an Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first person in a foreign-language performance to do so.
After a long and widely acclaimed film career (one which included a marriage proposal from none other than Cary Grant), Loren went on a hiatus, only appearing in one short film, “La Voce Umana” (“The Human Voice”) back in 2014. She reportedly jumped at the chance to star in the Netflix film, stating the character she plays “reminded her of her own mother.”
Loren’s mother, Romilda Villani, harbored the same interest in the film industry as her daughter. As a young girl, Villani even entered a Greta Garbo look-alike contest to jumpstart her career. After a few roadblocks along the way, Villani instead decided to channel her dreams of acting into her eldest daughter’s future. The two of them as well as Loren’s younger sister, Maria, moved to Rome after the war to make this dream come true. It was here she met Carlo Ponti, her future husband, and where she landed her first few roles that would eventually launch a decades-long career.
“The Life Ahead” is scheduled to be released on Nov. 13.
