Bad Education picked up the win for outstanding television movie at Saturday night's Creative Arts Emmys ceremony.
In a pre-recorded video from home, producer Eddie Vaisman said, "We tried to make an entertaining film about institutional corruption and the way our economic system ensnares us all, and it would have been nothing without the astonishing performances of Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ray Romano and the rest of our phenomenal cast." He also sent thanks to the writers, producers, crew and team at HBO.
Bad Education beat out American Son, Dolly Parton's Heartstrings: These Old Bones, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend in the category, which has typically been part of the primetime broadcast but was moved to the Creative Arts portion for the first time. Jackman is also nominated for his role in the film in the lead actor in a limited series or movie category, which will be presented in the main Emmy Awards telecast on Sunday night.
Black Mirror has won for TV movie the last three straight years but was ineligible in 2020. The category has become increasingly muddled in recent years, with contenders ranging from biopics and topical dramas that have historically made up its bread and butter to interactive specials and postscript films added onto traditional series as finales.
The winners were announced as part of the five-night virtual Creative Arts Emmys event hosted by Nicole Byer, which started on Monday and culminated in Saturday's two-hour broadcast ceremony on FXX. The Primetime Emmys will follow on Sunday, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel from an audience-less Staples Center, and airing on ABC at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
