Syracuse, N.Y. -- A new movie filmed in Central New York is gaining fans thanks to Netflix.
“Banana Split,” produced by the Liverpool-based American High, premiered on the streaming service last week and briefly shot up to the top 10 trending titles list on Netflix. Social media users have shared their reviews and reactions, celebrity news blog Nicki Swift called it “the rom-com that’s crushing it on Netflix right now,” and E! News did an in-depth look at the cast featuring “all your favorite up-and-comers.”
The coming-of-age film follows two teenage girls who become best friends over a summer, despite an awkward issue: One of them is dating the other’s ex.
Directed by Benjamin Kasulke, “Banana Split” stars Hannah Marks (“The Amazing Spider-Man”), Dylan Sprouse (“Big Daddy,” “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody”), Liana Liberato (“Trust”), Luke Spencer Roberts (”Fear the Walking Dead”), Addison Riecke (”The Thundermans”) and Jacob Batalon (Peter Parker’s friend in Marvel’s “Spider-Man” and “Avengers” movies). Marks wrote the script with Joey Power.
Scenes were filmed in December 2017 at Heid’s ice cream shop — yes, a banana split is served there — along with the Palace Theater in Eastwood, a private residence on Sedgwick Drive in Syracuse, a local bowling alley, and the former A.V. Zogg Middle School in Liverpool, now known as Syracuse Studios. Oddly, though, the movie is set in California; Sprouse, who played Adam Sandler’s fake son in “Big Daddy” with his twin brother, said some outdoor scenes were shot in Los Angeles due to CNY’s cold weather.
“Banana Split” won the Special Jury Prize at the Independent Film Festival Of Boston, the Jury Prize for Best Comedy Feature at the Woods Hole Film Festival, and multiple awards at the 2019 Oceanside International Film Festival, including best picture. The film is currently “certified fresh” with an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie made its world premiere in 2018 and was originally released March 27, 2020, on digital/video-on-demand before arriving on Netflix.
Three other American High movies shot in the Syracuse area were also released this past spring. “Holly Slept Over” and “Looks That Kill” are currently available on digital and VOD, while “Big Time Adolescence,” starring Pete Davidson, is streaming on Hulu. All are produced by American High founder Jeremy Garelick, known for directing “The Wedding Ringer,” writing “The Break-Up,” and uncredited writing work for “The Hangover.”
“The Binge,” directed by Garelick and starring Vince Vaughn, will be the studio’s fifth release when it hits Hulu on Friday, Aug. 28.
Other American High movies shot in Syracuse over the past two and a half years include “Looks That Kill” (starring Brandon Flynn), “Sid is Dead” (starring Joey Bragg and Mary Stuart Masterson) and “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise” (starring Keean Johnson and Madeline Brewer). American High plans to shoot its eighth movie soon after New York state announced film productions can resume with coronavirus restrictions.
