The Fourth of July weekend usually is one of the biggest movie-going times of the year.
During the pandemic, maybe not so much. Only a handful of theaters and a couple pop-up drive-ins are open, with safety measures in place.
But there are movies playing in the Milwaukee area this Fourth of July. Here's a guide; check theater websites for showtimes and safety precautions.
Marcus Theatres' drive-ins
Parking Lot Cinema, Marcus' outdoor experiment, continues at two Milwaukee-area locations. Movies start at 9 p.m.; gates open at 7. See marcustheatres.com for details.
- Majestic Cinema, 770 N. Springdale Road, Brookfield, is showing a double feature of "Jumanji: The Next Level" and the original "Ghostbusters." Tickets are $31.50 per car Friday through Sunday; the program continues through Thursday, July 9.
- South Shore Cinema, 7261 S. 13th St., Oak Creek, has the live-action "The Jungle Book" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Tickets are $26 per car Friday through Sunday; the program continues through Thursday, July 9.
Milky Way Drive-In
The pop-up drive-in outside Franklin Field now shares time (and parking spaces) with the Milwaukee Milkmen; the professional baseball team starts its season Friday at the ballpark, at 7900 Crystal Ridge Drive in Franklin.
This weekend, baseball will be on the drive-in screen, too. Tickets are $35 per car per movie, available at milkywaydrivein.com. The lineup:
Saturday: 6:30 p.m., "Major League"; 9:15 p.m., "Moneyball"
Sunday: 6:30 p.m., "A League of Their Own"; 9:15 p.m., "Bull Durham"

Marcus Theatres' indoor movies
Marcus has two Milwaukee-area theaters open. Admission is $5; see marcustheatres.com for tickets and showtimes.
- The Ridge, 5200 S. Moorland Road, New Berlin, has varying showtimes Friday through Sunday (and again Tuesday). Showing: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Wonder Woman," the original "Ghostbusters," "Dunkirk," "Deadpool," "The Jungle Book" (2016), "Jumanji: The Next Level," "Back to the Future," "Bloodshot," "The Invisible Man," "Knives Out," "Jurassic Park," and two Harry Potter movies, "The Order of the Phoenix" and "The Half-Blood Prince."
- Bistroplex Southridge, 5210 S. 76th St., Greendale, adds a new-to-Milwaukee horror movie, the found-footage thriller "Followed," to its mix starting Friday. Also showing: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Dark Knight Rises," the original "Ghostbusters," "The Invisible Man," "Deadpool," "Mad Max: Fury Road," and Harry Potter entries "The Order of the Phoenix" and "The Half-Blood Prince."
Fox-Bay Cinema Grill
Fox-Bay, the neighborhood theater at 334 E. Silver Spring Drive in Whitefish Bay, was the first movie house to open in the Milwaukee area after lockdown restrictions started easing in late May with mostly second-run movies and recent blockbusters. Starting Friday, Fox-Bay is showing "Batman Begins," "The Matrix," and Alfred Hitchcock classics "Psycho" and "The Birds," and it's continuing its run of "Irresistible," the Jon Stewart political comedy set in Wisconsin. Admission is $5; see foxbaycinemagrill.com for details.

The Rivoli is showing "Knives Out" at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday, and the live-action "The Jungle Book" at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $4. (Both continue through Thursday, July 9.)
