Eddie Redmayne won plenty of plaudits for his performance as a transgender woman in The Danish Girl, but he's now admitted starring in the movie was "a mistake."
He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2016 for his portrayal of Lili Elbe, while co-star Alicia Vikander won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as Gerda Wegener. While the movie was celebrated at the time, it also came in for criticism from some in the transgender community.
Both Redmayne and Vikander have since spoken out about the casting, and suggested they'd do things differently in hindsight.
What Did Eddie Redmayne Say?
During a recent interview with British newspaper The Sunday Times, Redmayne reflected on his career and admitted that he regrets starring in the 2015 movie The Danish Girl.
He said: "No I wouldn't make that film now. I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake."
At the time there were calls for the role to be played by a transgender actor, and Redmayne seemingly now agrees with the sentiment. "The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don't have a chair at the table. There must be a levelling, otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates," Redmayne added.
When The Danish Girl was released in 2015, Redmayne partly prepared for the role by having discussions with The Matrix director Lana Wachowski, who is a trans woman.
At the time, Redmayne acknowledged his casting in an interview with Indiewire when asked about being a cis-gendered man in a trans role. He said: "I hope there's a day when there are more trans actors and trans actresses playing trans parts, but also cisgender parts. And I hope — as an actor one hopes — that one should be able to play any sort of part if one plays it with a sense of integrity and responsibility."
Redmayne stars in the Fantastic Beasts movie franchise, part of the Harry Potter universe, which is written by J.K. Rowling. Rowling has faced strong criticism for her views about transgender terms.
Redmayne spoke out about the situation last year and made his stance clear, saying: "I disagree with Jo's comments. Trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid. I would never want to speak on behalf of the community but I do know that my dear transgender friends and colleagues are tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse. They simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it's time to let them do so."
Alicia Vikander's Stance on The Danish Girl Casting
Vikander won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in The Danish Girl, but has also acknowledged the criticism of the movie's casting was valid.
In an interview with Insider in August, she said while Redmayne was "wonderful" in the role: "I totally understand the criticism that has been out there, because we need to make change and we need to make sure that trans men and women actually get a foot in and get work."
She continued, "My only concern is that we may need to get to a point in the end where we have trans women and men playing cis characters. Because that is the main thing, you know?"
In The Danish Girl, Vikander played famous artist Gerda Wegener whose representation on screen was also criticized for changing historical facts and not representing Wegener's sexuality.
