The red carpet was rolled out in front of the Emmaus Theatre on Monday night, ready to be walked all over by that evening’s VIPs.

Despite the glitz and glamour of the stars on the silver screen, it wasn’t too crazy of a night — they all had school the next day.

Filmmakers, actors, writers, cinematographers and more, all in middle school and high school around the Lehigh Valley, descended upon the beloved theater for the world premiere of their 10 short films, all part of the 17th annual Emmaus Arts Commission Student Film Festival. The festival participants, along with family, friends and film-lovers, packed the theater for the festival and subsequent awards ceremony.

Despite its existence that’s older than some of this year’s participants, this was the first year for the newly revamped festival, fashioned by fest director Steve Cameron.

The festival included six teams of high schoolers and four teams of middle schoolers writing and filming their debut short films with dreams of going Hollywood. Nearly all garnered nominations for the Oscars-style awards show that followed the premiere of their short films.

Nominations were announced on Friday after a panel of judges reviewed each film.

The big winners, taking home the middle school and high school Best Picture awards were “Cousin Craze Mystery” and “Unrelated Murders,” respectively. The latter film led the way with four awards total, all in the high school division, including Best Director for Sadie Kennedy, Best Screenplay for Arian and Augustus Smith and Best Use of Required Materials — each film was required to reference Emmaus in some way, have a helmet as a prop and use the line of dialogue “oh wait...we have to stop for cheesecake!”

Other winners included high schooler Nathan Peters for Best Actor in “Fruitasia,” middle schooler Ezra Schreiner for Best Actor in “Jimmy Those Cookies!” and Charlotte Patterson’s “Cousin Craze Mystery” script for the middle school Best Screenplay award. The full list of winners is below.

Cameron’s first year running the festival was in 2020, and COVID-19 forced the festival to happen virtually, so this is his first proper year steering the ship. He sees a burgeoning potential in the festival to expand even further and hopes to bring in more teams and schools to participate.
